replace ads with art

   You have replaced my ads with images of muddy windows. Is this your idea of art? If so, you have brought out my inner philistine, and I have to say, your slavish devotion to a modern art aesthetic displays a fundamental lack of common sense on your part. Do you think most people want to look at muddy windows on their computer in the DEAD OF WINTER!?!? whenever they drive somewhere they have to trudge through the snowy sludge and then struggle to clean the crap off their windshields? Then they come into the office or get home, turn on the computer, and see more of the crap??? Think a little, guys, when you pick the images.

   Oh, I'm sorry, that I have not the patience to "contemplate" the difficulty of these images and "confront" my "unidentifiable spaces".

   This is one "SMALL DISCREET TRAUMA" I DO NOT WANT TO REPLICATE.

   The art changes every 2 weeks. The next show comes out on Thursday.

   Out of curiosity do you have any old emails like this you have sent real world museums and galleries?

   I must admit, I completely agree. As a new user, having eagerly installed this application, to be greeted by muddy windows is an utter let down. It's almost as bad as looking at the ads themselves.

   How come the art is the same image for 2 weeks? That seems like a long time, after two weeks of seeing the same image countless times it wouldnt matter if it's muddy windows or picasa, anything would be boring. Wouldn't it be better to just have a directory full of different art images which get randomly displayed, that way any user can delete the ones they dont like (muddy windows for example) and add any images they want, like photos. You could just point add-art to your My Pictures directory and say "add-art, show me these photos instead of those adverts please!" Add-art is a fantastic concept but I think the execution needs to be tweaked.

   That's not one of our goals. The mission of Add-Art is to present people with rotating shows of curated contemporary art. It's also not meant to work as wall paper or decoration. If the art is new, interesting, and challenging, then it's working. Our goal also is not to please everyone. If you don't like this show, check back tomorrow because we'll have new art.

   OK, well that was just an idea, but even so I think the way you deliver art needs to be different. Firstly, it can't be curated because any curation will introduce an inherent bias to the style of art - perhaps how muddy windows made it through the selection process. Second, there needs to be a way to skip art you don't like. If I don't want to see muddy windows everywhere, I should be able to say "no thanks". That type of user-curation is acceptable of course. This could also be achieved simply by reducing the amount of time an art piece is displayed, or not restricting the display to one piece. Make it random and varied. If you want to expose people to new art, please tell me which is better; 26 pieces a year under the current 2-week process or potentially hundreds under a more dynamic system.

   Thanks Jim.

   For what it's worth, I think there are actually 8 different muddy windows. (But that's not the point.) There are up to 136 different works in a show, but curators and artists choose to take advantage of it differently. The current show is probably a bad example of what's possible.

   Ability to say "no thanks" is available now in that you can disable the plugin. The ability to throw a switch until the new art comes would be nice. If it's a priority to you and you want to submit some code, we'll roll it in. All the coders we have are volunteers and we're stretched pretty thin. If you can contribute, we'd welcome it.

   Curating is a key part of Add-Art. Making shows happen more often is not as simple as it sounds - we only have so much in resources, both time (preparing and releasing shows takes more time that you'd imagine) and financial. If you'd like more info try here:
