Steve doesn't at all seem "defensive" -- he comes across, to me, as someone trying to explain what the purpose of the add-on is. And the art is not "stupid" -- it's just not to your taste.

I am an art history professor, and this kind of discussion reminds me why I make my students have discussions, every semester, about what constitutes "art." The discussion, it seems, continues -- and maybe explains why fluffy, feel-good mall art such as that by the Thomas Kincade brand continues to outsell and outpace the sales of any other artist in the world. There's already enough franchise, brand art in the world. Can't we have some space for some real thought for a change?

Keep up the good work, Add-Art!! I, for one, am now a committed supporter. And WAY TO GO, Steve, for sticking to your guns!

1. In the address bar, type about:config, and then press Enter.
2. Scroll down to image.animation_mode.
3. Right-click the value, click Modify, type "none" or "once" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.

Note: "none" means that an animation won't play at all; "once" means that it will play once and then stop; and "normal" means, well, normal animation.

I don't care if you want to drive away the mainstream, but you should say it upfront. I could care less if you do or don't like a set, many users want a choice. I'm sure you don't listen to 1 radio station for 2 weeks or watch 1 TV channel for 2 weeks. People want a choice. That is what drew people to Firefox to begin with. They don't like it when you tell them (I am paraphrasing here), Don't like the art? Tough! turn it off! See you in 2 weeks!

If most of the users complain I'm sure other alternatives to this software will appear. Especially when the software is open source. Then your venue will have less of an audience.

as a former (and future) Add-Art curator who is responsible for a show people loved (soothing mountain views by Monica Studer and Christoph van den Berg) and a show people, let's say, were irked by (photographs from the election campaign by Jon Winet) I want to say, for the record, I bloody love this animation show. I think it's awesome! It's been a total delight on otherwise mindless web-trawling sessions, to have my attention drawn to these fantastic and funny drawings by Adam.
I think the sentiment that a single artist's work could discredit an entire community is just a tad far-fetched. I'm all for a single artist's work completely redefining what art means, renegotiating all the possible spaces art can inhabit, and reconfiguring the brains of people who look at it.

Boo! You are not welcome! Thanks for bringing me to remove this add-on! I pray that we never have to see this type of "art" again! Those people out there that wanted an alternative to ads only got smacked just because they wasted their time installing this add-on. The poor reviews of this add-on can be directly correlated to your set of "art". Thanks for discrediting this add-on in the online community. With that said, I can't wait for the next set of art so long as it isn't worse than your set.

As BCAST on Add-Art comes to a close, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank Steve for supporting this project and encouraging me to do what I want within its parameters, as well as offer some thoughts as well.

I think part of what makes add-art, and the internet so fascinating, is the manner in which still and moving images are presented simultaneously, all with competing voices, all of them trying to get your attention, all trying to draw you in another direction. I've really enjoyed having the chance to use add art to reconfigure and unite these ad spaces to my own means and images.

As Steve observed, Add Add provides image and animation replacement. Its primary purpose is not to block ads, because there are already applications that provide these services. Considering this, I decided to make something that would be hard to tune out. I included GIFs because they are ubiquitous in web travels. In my mind, to ignore their presence and potential is to close a door on its possibilities. If anything, there will be more video and animation online in the future, and honestly, I couldn't resist putting my own stamp on their use. Clearly, this got under some peoples skin, and others didn't mind, and still others liked it. And a lot of those that didn't like it posted. : )

So as this draws to a close, I'd like to thank you for your browsers. I hope you'll come back next week if you were frustrated, I'm glad if you liked it, and I hope you will continue to support Add Art.

It is not intended to be wallpaper at all. It is called Add-*Art* for a reason. Before the plugin was even made, the New York Times asked me "what if people don't like the art" and this is what I said:

“If you hate the artwork, there is a way you could turn it off until the show was over,” Mr. Lambert said. “I don’t make money from this, so if it bothers some people, that’s O.K. Art should bother some people.”

So when people get upset because they don't like the art, and expect satisfaction, or expect me or anyone else to react and "fix" it, it still strikes me as a misunderstanding.

We do 26 different shows a year. I think this marks the one year anniversary of public release and this is the first animation show. During the course of this show there has been no significant change in the number of users. If for two weeks a few people really don't like a show, then that's fine. Just turn it off and come back later - it's as simple as that.

Let me quote from the main page (you probably wrote it!)

AddArt is a Firefox extension which replaces advertising images on web pages with art images from a curated database.

80-90% of the advertisement images that are being replaced are being replaced because they are amazingly irritating and stupid. They flash. They wiggle. They move to and fro. The only thing worse are the fly out ones.

So when you use animated artwork to replace these ads, it's like replacing a mugger with a guy holding a gun. There isn't much difference.

Again, I am actually amazed that you would even pose this question to us. So, just in case you missed the vast majority opinion here - most of the users of addart do NOT like animated artwork as an offering. I counted at least 4 people who created an account for the explicit purpose of stating this in the forum - myself included.

Honestly, I have nothing against the current artist or his work. But, it just is not the right venue to show off what he creates.

I think the art is great, if they were not moving frenetically I couldn't care less.

Animations are distracting and defeat the whole purpose of this plugin. On the shows before, the ads would give a different "feel" to the Internet, as all the ad boxes would show awesome artwork. This time, it feels like the whole Internet is alive with 90s-style flashing GIFs that make it impossible to read websites. Not okay.

I don't want a different source for the shows, the shows are great. I want to either be able to disable the flashing gifs (maybe show only the first frame of the animation) or have there be a non-moving art only rule.

I expected "serene landscapes" and "pleasant" works - boring and uninspiring. I like art that is created by experimenting and taking risks. The current art is indeed extremely annoying, but at least it's interesting. It takes the idea of subverting advertising techniques to another level. People have been reacting to it strongly because "annoying" is what they were trying to escape. Those people who don't appreciate innovation and risk-taking (even when it backfires horribly) should just stick to AdBlock.

But I was prompted to join this forum for the reasons stated above; I find the current show as distracting as the ads. Don't get me wrong; I'm a fan of animation and like some of the items here, just not in the Add-Art situation.
I have often not liked a show at first, stayed with it and grown to like it, or at least appreciate it, although on some occasions I do look forward to the two-weekly change. On the other hand I LOVE some of the shows and would like to have them for longer. Would it be possible to choose to keep/return to past shows temporarily?
I appreciate that you're working on the option of a choice of shows and look forward to that.

As jcsahnwaldt said, it's not just about preference or taste, or even just distraction: it's about flicker and movement. Many of us want Add-Art and are using Ad-Block expressly to STOP flicker and movement.

Why? MIGRAINES. And for some, seizures. People should really know this by now.

I like the idea of having a couple of different streams of art to choose from, but it's not even necessary: please, just make something movement-free available. That is really the whole point for me (and many others).
