I don't know how practicable this would be, but just think about it -- you could transform the dumbing-down advertising into a learning experience! Maybe include a clickthrough link to the artist's page, or a relevant wiki article, an exhibition featuring the art, etc., if that's possible.
For now, though, I'll be content to look at the pretty pictures.

It can be great to put the mouse over and see "artbanner: La Gioconda. Leonardo da Vinci" instead of just "artbanner". What do you think?
