Fair enough, maybe I will add something to the site that says "everyone doesn't like every show and everyone has a different definition of offensive" or something.

Unfortunately, our development wiki seems to be down right now but will be up soon:
http://dev.eyebeam.org/projects/add-art/wiki/Add-Art
and it explains how we worked on things.

In the meantime you can read and search all the archived emails of the development list here:
http://lists.add-art.org/htdig.cgi/supperclub-add-art.org

The capability for users to select art is kinda there, as I see it. We pull art from a server, it's just a matter of letting users select which server. That part hasn't been written. But I actually believe we're very close. We just haven't been able to make it happen - mainly due to lack of time.

Oh. OK.

Yes Steve, the image freaked me a little, I live in london UK. It's not an everyday, or even normal for add-art picture.

My argument should have been more focused. (and OK i ranted a little, sorry to throw that in your direction, but after reading through the forum posts i lost my rag a little.)

Your point everyones idea of gross is a little different. Is quite valid.

I guess it was just the thought that my boy could have seen this picture, this computer is in the living room and he is 4 years old.

**Again, i would urge you make this more relevant on your home page. Please consider a message that says this software is not suitable for children or those of a squeamish disposition. **

Had this been in place, my comment would be null and void.

So please, if you answer at all, please comment on this point. And i think we can safely just put the rest to banter.

I would be interesting in looking at the interface for options. If there is an old copy in the git, what version of add-art was it branched from? ie how old is base code compared to current code.

I will gladly commit changes.

We worked on it. We just were never able to get it to a working state. If you want to build on our work, please do it. The code is free. If you use that code as is, you'll see it doesn't work yet.

Go ahead and fork the project. (Just know the code is GPL so any improvements you make I might roll into this plugin as well.) But let me warn you, if you fork the project, you're in for more work than you know. I'd be glad to pass it on. And then you'll start getting emails complaining about the art. And then people will be mad at you for not sharing their outrage. I wouldn't call it a "complex" as much as a curse.

The "waah waah I don't like the art" tag amuses. It's how I get through the vitriol from people who decide their determination of what is offensive is the right one. It happens every so often, so I have my little ways of entertaining myself.

You know, if everyone loved the art all the time, there would be something wrong. I didn't get into this thing to become a censor. You find it disturbing, others don't. Would it be different if the chicken in the picture was cooked?

Ok post removed, it's all relevant, but lets try a different tack.

Steve, if a working preferences dialog is produced, you will commit it?

And out of curiosity, your telling me, no one has already done this, and attempted to get it commited ?

i'd also like you to know that i've been running this software for over a year, and this image was the straw that broke the camels back.

You really do have to consider that this will be installed on family machines, and that your update button, should give an option to 'view' the newly downloaded images, before applying the new gallery.

As stated elsewhere, if don't like the show you can:

1. You can turn Add-Art off and turn it back on in two weeks.

2. Submit code to improve Add-Art.

This is a place to vent I suppose, and you're welcome to do that, but please keep it civil. Also, venting won't make the images go away (like #1) and it wont change your options (like #2).

Oh right, so I just read through the forum.

How about on your mainpage you state that this software is not suitable for normal minded people. or the computer in your living room ?

I'm quite sure there are laws here where you have to state certain facts. very much like porn sites do.

i'll be sure to look into that.

if your so preoccupied with dildos, pls keep it to yourself.

if you like seeing animals carved up, i'm sure you can find a culling house to get some better pictures than that.

You might call it general cable, but not before 8 or 9 pm. That's called a 'watershed' baby, go look it up .

Again, you don't put up any information about this on your website, that gives the general idea that i'll be looking at DISTURBING images you wouldn't get the amount of downloads you get, and you know it.

And yes, i'll be sure to fork you.

I'm pretty solid on my feeling that we didn't cross the "basic cable" line I mentioned earlier. So I wont admit anything there.

Fix it... well, you're asking me to fix something I don't see a problem with, but lets go with that anyway. One way we could fix this, which I have mentioned before in this thread and elsewhere on this forum, is to allow users to select from multiple feeds of art. So you could choose to see only... I dunno what you want to see - let's say non-threatening and unchallenging art. And you could choose that. And others, like myself, could choose to see interesting things that we've never seen before that sometimes we like and sometimes we don't that challenge us and change out perspective. Then, everyone has choices and everyone is happy.

How does this happen? Well, we need some code. You can look at the code here:
http://github.com/slambert/Add-Art
Then you can fork the project or you can send me code and I'll be glad to put it in. "But I am not a programmer!" you say. Neither am I, but I sat down with some friends and we figured it out. You could also hire someone. That's the beauty of this being a free and open-source project - you can change it however you want. If you don't like it, you fix it.

This is a free project, not a company. So complaining to me wont do much. If you were paying me and I made a living this way, then maybe it would. But I give this away for free, and everyone working on this does it for free, because we love it. People have contributed to the project in all kinds of ways out of passion and generosity.

So you don't like our gift. Ok. Don't take the gift. But the beauty of it, is that the gift can change when you add something. So to summarize, your two options are add something, or walk away. Because insisting that I do something to make you satisfied is not going to work out.

And to your last point, arrogant... I don't know, maybe I am. I did think this whole thing up and guide it through from nothing to the light of day and have kept it going for 2 or 3 years. I am proud of my work and feel pretty good about that. Though I don't know if I would go all the way to arrogant.

Maybe it comes across that way because you are swearing and seem really pissed and I'm not.

Hi Madeiracam:

It's Carolina Miranda, organizer of the show you're looking at. Perhaps this does appear to be a bad joke, but as I mention in the write-up I did to accompany the show, these are all ad campaigns in concept only. The "companies" the artists are touting are non-existent, or are part of long-running art projects. Hargo, who does Cash For Your Warhol, for example, started this project as part of a series where he created roadside signs that mimic actual advertising. He is not actually buying Warhols. "Stay Up" is for a fictional energy drink that plays on street art language. There is no Time Travel Agency because there is (currently) no time travel. The idea was for the artists to work with the concept of advertising as a basis of inspiration. But I can assure you -- this is not advertising, even if it resembles it in every way shape or form.

You can see my original write-up here: http://add-art.org/8945/shows/sell-out-by-carolina-miranda

Best,
Carolina

As a new user I was excited to see my white space filled with new advertisement-free images. Unfortunately I have been noticing that my once empty space has now been replaced by art related advertisements.

Examples being "stay up energy drinks"

"Cash for your warhols"

Can someone explain how replacing advertisements with other advertisements is ok? Even if the new ads are for much smaller businesses or non profits, it still feels unethical.

The whole thing feels like a bad joke. I'm not too sure if I'm at the but.

Wait, wait, wait. You can post a fucking cartoon dildo randomly on strangers' web browsers, but you have delicate ears when it comes to perfectly appropriate profanity? Oh, and my kids ain't here right now, nutsack. But, the browser, and your stupid fucking "show" is.

No, this isn't difficult to discern. A dildo is pretty fucking plainly inappropriate to randomly inject into peoples' browsing experiences. A woman breast feeding can, unfortunately, be considered NSFW by a few knuckleheads in this country founded by fucking Puritans. But, it would actually be defensible. Hell, I'd defend you. A cartoon fucking dildo isn't, asswipe.

A. Fucking. Dildo.

Maybe I will do a show. It will be deliberately offensive, and you'll put it up because you're a complete fucking douche nozzle.

You are an asshole.

Fuck. You.
