pedant on "Distracting art pieces"

The art show running at the minute has, as one piece, a piece of text starting 'My Dad was always handy with his fists'. Another piece has 'I cut open my own appendix wound, stuck pins on the inside of the wound and swallowed a broken light bulb.'

Now, while I'm certainly not against artwork depicting reaction to domestic abuse, and I consider self-harm to be an important topic, doesn't this run against the idea of having banners that don't distract attention from the main page?

And, as someone who fancies himself a writer, the 'appendix wound' piece is expressed very poorly, I think.

Thanks for any help.

hello, i'm new to both add-art and this forum.
i really enjoy add-art, and how it has already improved my internet-viewing experience. it was a real shock the first time i saw a website with blocked ads. it didn't seem real at first. it's funny what the constant bombardment of advertising does to our brains..

anyway, i have a question. a critique in a sense:

if the point of add-art is to block advertisements, and replace it with "art", then why am i seeing blatant advertisements for 350.org? although the images double as documents of performances (groups of people organized to form the numbers '350'), and this 350.org website seems to be for a legitimate cause, they are still advertisements. this seems almost hypocritical.

not that i don't like seeing this type of advertisement as opposed to something more geared towards money-making, the whole reason i decided to install add-art was to escape advertisement completely.

Rise&Fall is a mobile art installation and music event commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The exhibition features artwork interpreting the theme 'bringing down walls/breaking down barriers' (both literally and symbolically) and music performed by Turkish-German DJ/Producer, DJ Ipek Ipekcioglu. Artists, from amateur to professional, are invited to submit digital versions of their art along with a short description of what 'bringing down walls' means to them - either as directly related to the Berlin Wall or on a more symbolic, personal, cultural or social level. The goal is to create an interactive environment that celebrates freedom without barriers and what that looks like to all kinds of people.

The selected images and descriptions will be displayed on digital frames and projected in event venues across the U.S. during Rise&Fall events. Artists will also have the opportunity to submit purchase information for their art piece and a link to their website or portfolio. A select group of Rise&Fall art will be invited to be published in a limited-edition, commemorative Rise&Fall book of which the selected artists will receive one free. Events will take place in New York, Miami, Boston, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles in November 2009.
Art accepted until September 30, 2009.
Submit art by going to: http://www.rise-fall.com.

Hi everyone, just a question I thought I'd throw out into the ring. I'll be teaching a summer term course that starts in a few weeks. The focus of the course will be Internet Art and although it won't be all inclusive, I plan to talk a little about Firefox plugins. One of the projects for the students involves collaborative work. Perhaps its a bit late to make this happen this summer, but maybe in the future?

What would be Add-Art's take on an exhibition of student work? What if a student project revolved around the parameters of the Add-Art plugin?

Trivia I have been thinking about this week is:

Is Add-art a public performance free for any passers-by to see while they go about their daily business? Or is it a Gallery that you have to know about and actively choose to visit?

If the latter; what about colleagues, family, other coffeshop customers, and pretty much anyone who might look over your shoulder? is it a public performance for them?

I'd love to know what others think, and especially how the curators view this. Would you argue that by installing add-art we have entered your gallery?

For instance; might you put really challenging images on it? I have no idea how you might define explicit? Nudity? Death? Disfiguration? Desecration? Graven Idols?

I wouldn't object(*) and my boss would probably ask 'whats that?' and be interested in the response. But in other places they might say 'you're fired, perv.' or 'Security, grab them, I'll call the police.'

Or is it a mute question since you'd never go down such a route?

EZ.

(*) I live in Amsterdam, nudity etc. is no big deal here; but religious and racial offence can be. Mind you, anyone in my local Coffeeshop (think about it) who might be offended by nudity etc.. will probably have been pre-offended by the other activities taking place ;-)

there are so many posts in this forum from users that are unhappy with the art provided by this plugin.

there are very few posts in this forum from users that actually like this "product".

steve, it seems like you have the wrong attitude in this situation. I share the opinion of many other users that some of the art shows in recent weeks have not been aesthetically pleasing, or have been downright distracting. A common complaint is that such images also make us look weird at work or school as well.

The fact that so many people have come to the forum page to give you the negative feedback is a good sign that people like the concept of your plugin and downloaded it. it also shows that they like it enough to want to try to contact you to make it better.

however, all of the responses from steve have indicated that he does not want to make any changes to plugin. does that mean that we, the users or "customers" of your product are wrong?

your attitude should be more in line with trying to deliver what we, your customers, or users, want. the fact that there is a tag labeled "waah waah i dont like the art" is a perfect example of how you are missing the point. the point is that if we don't like the art, we are going to delete the plugin.

nobody here cares about your mission statement, because it makes us look at art we don't want to see. the vast majority of your customers want to see beautiful pictures instead of thought provoking, avant-garde images.

when i first downloaded the plugin, i was treated to cool bits of abstract art, strange photography, etc. personally, the muddy windows didnt bother me that much.

however, the weird pics of almost-exposed naked women from the 60s and some shitty photoshopping of some dude with glasses coming out of another larger head was pretty stupid and, im sure this word is being overused here, but distracting.

steve, why dont you give your customers what they want? if this plugin gets even more popular, you can get a lot more money from newer and better "featured artists" later! right now you could use public domain images that would be much more popular. The art from last week was basically a public service announcement against abuse...how is that any different from a banner ad from a non-profit organization? it seems to go against the very idea of the plugin in the first place.

you say that the idea of the plugin is to showcase new "art shows". However, most of the people that downloaded this plugin have a very different idea...they downloaded it because they don't like to look at ugly and distracting banner ads, and would like to replace them with art that is pleasing to the eye.

so if we just have the wrong idea, that is fine, but you are losing an opportunity. you already have good momentum with this plugin, do you want to change everyone's mind, or give them what they want?

You have replaced my ads with images of muddy windows. Is this your idea of art? If so, you have brought out my inner philistine, and I have to say, your slavish devotion to a modern art aesthetic displays a fundamental lack of common sense on your part. Do you think most people want to look at muddy windows on their computer in the DEAD OF WINTER!?!? whenever they drive somewhere they have to trudge through the snowy sludge and then struggle to clean the crap off their windshields? Then they come into the office or get home, turn on the computer, and see more of the crap??? Think a little, guys, when you pick the images.

Oh, I'm sorry, that I have not the patience to "contemplate" the difficulty of these images and "confront" my "unidentifiable spaces".

This is one "SMALL DISCREET TRAUMA" I DO NOT WANT TO REPLICATE.

I'm wondering if any legal issues have come up in the blocking and replacing of advertisement. Have there ever been lawsuits from people who paid to have their ads on websites and are basically throwing away their money when it's not being seen. Not that I personally think they would have a leg to stand on in a legal battle.

I hadn't thought about it, but I was telling people how excited I was by my add-art, and one person at an advertising agency mentioned this issue.

Anyone know?

thanks

Hello,
would you mind much to exclude the most agressive kinds of art as they can be more distracting than real ads? Especially the "electoral" series is quite distracting, there are so many faces looking at me right now - this quite defeats the purpose of the addon for me right now.

Thanks,
