For a full year...I've noticed the distracting art...as a personal resolve it can divide the public from the common gallery...If you can handle it...wait for the next position and attempt to capitalize then.

Art by Shani Peters. Curated by Petrushka Bazin.

Inspired by the political illustrations and impact of artist and Black Panthers Minister of Culture Emory Douglas, New York-based artist Shani Peters’ work responds to the persisting schismatic elements that plague the African-American community to date. Looking at African-American families as a microcosm for the state of the community at-large, Peters uses the stories and images of both fictive and non-fictive African-American icons to revisit history in order to propose new endings. The disproportionate incarceration rate of Black men and the subsequent absence in their homes set the stage for her investigations.

In these bodies of work, she includes Douglas-inspired silkscreened prints; stills from her comedic video collages, which put characters from America’s favorite African-American television families in conversation with Black political leaders and activists from the1960s and 1970s; and digitally printed stick puppets, which appear in her latest video Battle for The Hearts and Minds (of Future Revolutionaries Everywhere).

For the next two weeks, Peters’ images occupy our computer screens. Similar to Douglas, she uses this public forum to address the realities of brokenness and the possibilities of wholeness within the African-American community. Her visual meditations remind us that the prison-industrial complex is real and Black fatherless families will increase if love and racial unity are not prioritized.

-Petrushka Bazin

___

Shani Peters received her B.A. from Michigan State University and her M.F.A. from The City College of New York. Her work has been exhibited and screened throughout New York, including group exhibitions at Rush Arts Gallery, the International Print Center New York, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. She has completed residencies at The Center for Book Arts and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space program. She is currently participating in the Bronx Museum’s 2010-11 Artist in the Marketplace program and is a Keyholder resident at the Lower East Side Printshop. Peters also works as a teaching artist with various community-based organizations in New York.

Petrushka Bazin is an independent curator and artist based in New York. She is currently the Program Associate and Exhibition Coordinator for The Laundromat Project, a community-based public art non-profit offering art programs in coin-ops throughout New York, and was the 2009-2010 Curatorial Fellow at The Kitchen, an interdisciplinary arts organization that supports and presents the work of innovative artists working in various disciplines.

As artists and citizens reflect deeper on the motivations of commercial advertising we have been increasingly wary of their affects, opting to ignore them or actively alter their meanings in our daily lives. As we face pressure from commercial messages on the internet we may choose to eliminate them with programs like Add-Art. In the public environment such an efficient solution is not available and our efforts to control the dissemination of commercial media face new and daunting challenges. The selected images highlight advertising detournements in the public sphere from a wide range of artists and activists operating globally.

Jordan Seiler is the founder of PublicAdCampaign, an artist/activist project started in NYC in late 2000. Through the reapropriation of outdoor advertising space, the PublicAdCampaign project questions commercial media's right to the city while demanding a more democratic outdoor media environment which assures public participation and interactions. Operating under the belief that physical interaction with the public environment is an important part of fulfilling your identity as a public citizen, PublicAdCampaign organizes large scale outdoor advertising takeovers as well as other collaborative actions, allowing residents to take personal responsibility for the cities they live in. Jordan Seiler currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Hi there! This is Ted, the curator of El Gogo. Thank you very much for sharing your reaction to the show, QJet. Your comment has been forwarded to the artist, Colleen Asper, and hopefully she'll chime in here with her thoughts.

I agree with almost everything you've written, though it seems like there are some differences in the way we see things: I wouldn't say that I find advertising "offensive" or that it calls forth any "deep seeded hate" in me. I simply don't have enough bile/testosterone in me to react with such passion. Usually, I regard advertising as a mild irritant, an obnoxious symptom of larger structural problems in our economy that, yes, cause much suffering and anguish. It's great that you are able to summon forth a plethora of bile and are willing to wield it with words. Your outrage seems genuine and well-intentioned, and I hope it can be channeled into useful political speech, so that it can become functional in a way that art isn't.

I also differ from you re: your last statement- I definitely don't have the same revulsion "at seeing company logos in advertising boxes as I would be seeing animal cruelty, rape, and gore, regardless of context, regardless of context." I find myself unable to disregard context.

But those quibbles aside, we are totally on the same page. I, too, don't care about the same things you don't care about:

I don't care if you're a philistine, or how great your distaste for advertisements is. I also don't care about your expectations, or about what is comprehensible/incomprehensible to you. I'm afraid your potential reaction simply didn't come up as a point of concern when Colleen and I were thinking through our plan for the show.

My choices were not in any way meant to offend you; of course I don't regret that oversight in the slightest.

And I'm sure I will sound like a shill by saying so, but it might be interesting for you to visit Colleen's website ( http://www.colleenasper.com ), and see some more images of her work. She really is a very good artist - BUT - I will give you fair warning - you will encounter images of corporate logos there.

While I hope you don't disable the plug-in permanently, it certainly seems as if your time on the internet might feel like less of a violation if you disabled it for the duration of El Gogo.

That said, I obviously do care that you took the time and effort to respond to the show, and I thank you for sharing your reactions - I guarantee that they will be a source of amusement and discussion in the future.

I feel I should expand on this thread because the current show is currently a women spelling out google with plasticine words hung around or near her body.

I don't care if you think me a philistine but here is the fundamental fact of the matter: When you spell out the name of the company, you evoke the image of that company. If you evoke the image of that company you ADVERTISE for that company. I find advertising offensive.

In a perfect world, you could do something like this without evoking the deep seeded hate I have for anyone and anything forcing their name down my throat.

Seriously, I don't care if an exhibition is trying to play on my distaste for advertisements, if I shouldn't be offended over company logos waving their name in my face like a gigantic streaker, I don't care if it's supposed to be a defiance of my expectations, a plea about how I identify names WITH companies, or really anything else that belongs here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TrueArtIsIncomprehensible

Flatly, I am as offended at seeing company logos in advertising boxes as I would be seeing animal cruelty, rape, and gore, regardless of context.

Please. Do. NOT. Advertise to me. Do I have to disable this plug-in?

I dig the proper nouns dissociation, but not when it applies to companies. The North Face would probably have shelled out a good hunk of money for what you're giving them for free. I haven't thought about a north face product all winter, now i'm reminded every day. Here's looking forward to the next exhibit.

don't get me wrong, this is a very near miss to genius. The artist's goals and yours combined with your media are almost in perfect symbiosis. almost.

In response to anyone's feedback regarding the display of "logos" and "ads" in the current exhibition. I curated the show, "This is SWIPE Country" with artist collective, Cornrow Rider.

The display of names and logos in the images was not a mistake. Our intention was to directly address the specific conditions and context of the banner ad space in the venue of an Internet/online viewing experience. This was our first guiding concern when we were thinking of ideas for this project, rather than just cropping images, into awkward dimensions nevertheless, from the artist's portfolio.

The artists, Cornrow Rider, work specifically with corporate logos, text, and/or loaded proper nouns (like "Mexicans" or the names of popular bands) in active disjuncture with an unrelated image. Their practice is part semiotics games and part socio-political critique. Without getting too specific about the complex implications, these logos, brand names, and proper nouns are separated from their normal context, combined with rare/common imagery, and reinserted in a familiar context (that of the online ad) - in order to both nullify their power as signs but also to call attention to their loaded nature. The reduction of the NBC logo to a purely decorative motif follows in this same notion. If you're interested in knowing more, feel free to read the curatorial statement online on the Add-Art website (http://add-art.org/4232/shows/michelle-hyun) or visit the artists' website, http://www.cornrowrider.com.

Our intentions for this exhibition never anticipated a wholly affirmative response, and I'm very encouraged that you've responded with your comments and opinions. Thank you! I'm committed to the idea that exhibitions and art should created agonistic spaces for discussion and debate. So, please feel free to contact me if you have more questions or want to continue the discussion.

Ok, perhaps I don't understand. My ads are now being replaced by ads/logos for The North Face. Perhaps I'm missing something here, I thought the idea of the application was to get away from banner ads...

Glad you like it. To clear up a couple things...

1. It's not a product, it's a project. We're not selling anything, you're not buying anything. It's a gift.

2. The goal was never to not distract anyone. Please read the last paragraph (pasted below) from this NY Times article from 2007 http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/14/technology/14adblock.html

“If you hate the artwork, there is a way you could turn it off until the show was over,” Mr. Lambert said. “I don’t make money from this, so if it bothers some people, that’s O.K. Art should bother some people.”

I realize this post is dated a year past but I would like to add that having the gif flashing while I'm trying to read an article is as distracting as the ads. As with the twirling crystal I had to place my hand over to cover it so I could read. Otherwise, I've enjoyed your product for quite awhile now. Thanks!

i just wanted to add that i completely enjoy the new art that i've been seeing! some really great stuff in this current exhibition. being new to add-art, this new collection shows the potential of the application, and simply put- it's awesome. so, thank you.

Hi there,

Sorry about those images, there was some confusion here about our policies. A set including those images went live for about 2 hours in error and a fraction of our users downloaded them. We have a new set of art up that you can replace them with. This is how you can do it.

1. enter about:config as the URL in your browser
2. in the filter field enter: add-art
3. click on currentImageSet and change the value to 1
4. click on expiration and change the number to 1
5. open a new browser window and wait for Firefox to download the new art. Restart when prompted.

Again, apologies. Up until now our policy was to let the artists and curators decide what was appropriate. We wanted to give as much freedom to the artists and curators as possible. For a year and a half this has basically worked. We decided to change that policy with this show as we felt it was unfair to put this work in front of so many people without giving them warning or a choice. Unfortunately, because this was being discussed up to the last minute, the original show went live for about 2 hours. When I realized what happened we took the show down, replaced the work, and reposted. For that period some people downloaded the original show. It was a mistake and the only thing I can do about it now is apologize and offer a way to correct it.

As far as your feature request - I really appreciate you putting it that way. We are working toward the same goals. Ultimately we want Add-Art to be a platform that takes feeds of art from multiple sources. So users can easily choose feeds of art and curators (of all levels) can easily create them. Add-Art is free and open source, so anyone can contribute code to move it forward. Of course, this also means we're all volunteers so things move more slowly than if we were employees of a company. If you'd like to get involved in development we have a site for that here: http://dev.eyebeam.org/projects/add-art/wiki/Add-Art and an email list.

Thank

Are you kidding me? Bondage pics? I used to use (notice the past tense) add-art to replace questionable ads that featured junk (pun totally intended) like this.

Forget using this program in a public place or a work location restricting this type of stuff.

Oh well...

We do 26 shows a year. Occasionally they are connected to non-profits. Nothing on here has promoted commercial goods. So that is the line. Your line of what you call advertising is different. For us, it's "selling stuff." Promoting ideas is different than selling stuff. A non-profit is not the same as a corporation; legally and philosophically.

For example, we also did a show in conjunction with the National Institute for Art and Disabilities. http://add-art.org/911/shows/911 Your definition of "advertising is to maximize sales, attendance, or interest" would mean we shouldn't mention NIAD's involvement in the show. In fact, "advertising is to maximize sales, attendance, or interest" is basically saying that any artist with an agenda or a message that wants to generate interest in it should not show their work on Add-Art. Every artist has a message - some messages are less noticeable because it promotes the status quo, reinforces art as a commodity in the gallery system, or art as decoration, but it all has a message.

To be really clear: artists messages are not the same as corporate messages, non-profits messages are not the same as corporate messages. If you want images that don't challenge your beliefs and perspectives, then I'm not sure it's art that you want. I can't promise that wont happen with all 26 shows we do.

That said, the point is for you to see other things instead of ads. If you can contribute code, we can improve Add-Art so people can provide and choose the sources of art. Code helps.

Also, there's a standing invitation for anyone who complains about the art here to curate a show. So, if you don't like it, show us what you like.

I absolutely agree deadbirdroad. I wouldn't say that the goals of the 350.org campaign aren't important, but it still is a campaign. I thought the purpose of add-art was to replace ads with art, not substitute ads for the ads that add-art.org choose to show us. But, its been said elsewhere, no one is forcing us to use add-art, so I guess i'll go back to plain ad-block.

your definition of advertisement is completely skewed.

granted, the majority of advertising that the public sees on the internet is for commerce.

advertising is not limited to this. advertising can be for a service, an event, goods, music, etc. the goal of advertising is to maximize sales, attendance, or interest.

in the case of 350.org, they are using performance art to form numbers/letters which is for the purpose of getting the viewer interested in visiting their website.

i really wasn't trying to start a debate, all i'm saying is that the "art" from 350.org is really just being used as an advertisement.

I've always thought it a shame that advertising has tainted our view of any art communicating a message. This art can often be seen as "selling something" when, in the case of 350.org, it's documenting non-commercial messages created by grassroots groups and individuals, demanding politicians to take action on the environment. Advertising is very different; a message coming from a corporation promoting a commercial product and broadcast to many.

The 350.org website is the unifying thread between what would have been disparate isolated actions. Instead there was an organizing structure. What we're seeing on Add-Art is evidence of creative work with the purpose of advocacy and political action. Art can do that. And it should.

hello, i'm new to both add-art and this forum.
i really enjoy add-art, and how it has already improved my internet-viewing experience. it was a real shock the first time i saw a website with blocked ads. it didn't seem real at first. it's funny what the constant bombardment of advertising does to our brains..

anyway, i have a question. a critique in a sense:

if the point of add-art is to block advertisements, and replace it with "art", then why am i seeing blatant advertisements for 350.org? although the images double as documents of performances (groups of people organized to form the numbers '350'), and this 350.org website seems to be for a legitimate cause, they are still advertisements. this seems almost hypocritical.

not that i don't like seeing this type of advertisement as opposed to something more geared towards money-making, the whole reason i decided to install add-art was to escape advertisement completely.

Rise&Fall is a mobile art installation and music event commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The exhibition features artwork interpreting the theme 'bringing down walls/breaking down barriers' (both literally and symbolically) and music performed by Turkish-German DJ/Producer, DJ Ipek Ipekcioglu. Artists, from amateur to professional, are invited to submit digital versions of their art along with a short description of what 'bringing down walls' means to them - either as directly related to the Berlin Wall or on a more symbolic, personal, cultural or social level. The goal is to create an interactive environment that celebrates freedom without barriers and what that looks like to all kinds of people.

The selected images and descriptions will be displayed on digital frames and projected in event venues across the U.S. during Rise&Fall events. Artists will also have the opportunity to submit purchase information for their art piece and a link to their website or portfolio. A select group of Rise&Fall art will be invited to be published in a limited-edition, commemorative Rise&Fall book of which the selected artists will receive one free. Events will take place in New York, Miami, Boston, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles in November 2009.
Art accepted until September 30, 2009.
Submit art by going to: http://www.rise-fall.com.

I don't see why there would be any problem with student artists, so long as you appoint a curator who is an external (ie isn't making artworks for the show). Previous shows have included "bodies" of work where rather than 1 image being cropped to different dimensions, several (10+) were adjusted to Add-Art's specs. I don't know what how far booked the Add-Art programing is, but if you were to act quickly you might be able to secure a date for the end of the summer.

Good luck!

Hi everyone, just a question I thought I'd throw out into the ring. I'll be teaching a summer term course that starts in a few weeks. The focus of the course will be Internet Art and although it won't be all inclusive, I plan to talk a little about Firefox plugins. One of the projects for the students involves collaborative work. Perhaps its a bit late to make this happen this summer, but maybe in the future?

What would be Add-Art's take on an exhibition of student work? What if a student project revolved around the parameters of the Add-Art plugin?

Trivia I have been thinking about this week is:

Is Add-art a public performance free for any passers-by to see while they go about their daily business? Or is it a Gallery that you have to know about and actively choose to visit?

If the latter; what about colleagues, family, other coffeshop customers, and pretty much anyone who might look over your shoulder? is it a public performance for them?

I'd love to know what others think, and especially how the curators view this. Would you argue that by installing add-art we have entered your gallery?

For instance; might you put really challenging images on it? I have no idea how you might define explicit? Nudity? Death? Disfiguration? Desecration? Graven Idols?

I wouldn't object(*) and my boss would probably ask 'whats that?' and be interested in the response. But in other places they might say 'you're fired, perv.' or 'Security, grab them, I'll call the police.'

Or is it a mute question since you'd never go down such a route?

EZ.

(*) I live in Amsterdam, nudity etc. is no big deal here; but religious and racial offence can be. Mind you, anyone in my local Coffeeshop (think about it) who might be offended by nudity etc.. will probably have been pre-offended by the other activities taking place ;-)
